5th generation Robert Cooke opens the doors to F. Cooke in Chelmsford

Established in 1862, F. Cooke first opened its doors on Slatter Street, E1 selling traditional pie and mash and eels. After the success of serving to East London, the founder, Robert Cooke went on to open many more shops across London. Fast forward to over 150 years later, 5th generation Robert Cooke is opening his very own F. Cooke on Moulsham Street, Chelmsford. Since his father (Bob Cooke) recently retired and closed an original F. Cooke on Broadway Market (est 1900), Robert was inspired to continue the family legacy and open his own in a place where most of London's East Enders have now moved to; Essex.
Inside the 985sq ft dining area and in keeping with the original eel and pie houses, the walls are covered in white and green tiles, 7000 to be exact. Black and white photos sit proudly on the walls featuring other F. Cooke shops that guests will most likely remember visiting over the years with their parents or grandparents bringing goosepimples of nostalgia. Large mirrors line the walls of this beautiful building presenting the F. Cooke heritage that has been built up over many years. Exceeding traditionalism, marble tables and wooden benches will take you back to the glory days of pie and mash. Using the same recipe that took London by storm, the kitchen, or bakehouse as it's called, is where all the food will be made fresh on the premises. The pies are made using the finest quality meat combined with locally sourced spuds for the mash. If you're left wanting more, the fruit pies with custard always go down a treat.
