How We Lay Block Paving in Guildford

Base installation:

Spread, level and compact a minimum 100mm thick layer of sub-base material.

The sub-base should be profiled or graded to match the planned profile of the finished paving and should be accurate to ±10mm. There should be no voids within the sub-base - any such voids should be filled with stone dust or grit sand and compacted before placing the laying course.

Edging and Kerbs
Edging and kerbs should be laid onto a concrete bed. Check that straight lines are indeed straight, and that the curves are 'sweet'. Once satisfied with the lines and curves, edge courses and kerbs should be solidly haunched with concrete at least 75mm thick.

Sand Base for Laying Paving
When compacted, the laying course sand should be 25-40mm deep. The key to successful screeding is creating a smooth, even and flowing surface on which to lay the bricks. The surface profile of the screeded laying course more or less matches that of the finished pavement, so attention to detail is essential.

Laying The Block Paving:
If you have chosen block paving, we will layout the possible patterns with the most common paving patterns being 45degree or 90degree herringbone. This angle is set by pulling a line off the house or driveway boundary depending on which is the most suitable.

Jointing and Compaction:
For standard block paving including Tegula paving, we will joint with kiln dried sand and machine vibrate compact the paving to lock in place using a whacker place. If its clay paving, we will use a rubber mat which is attached directly to the whacker to make sure we do not damage or break the clay pavers.

Along with the usual features such as manhole covers and edging, we always ensure to work closely with local guidelines which means if we are converting your front garden into a driveway, we will always insert new drainage systems which is required under SUDS regulations when installing a hard standing surface where an old permeable surface was.
