Paediatric Osteopathy

Since its founding in 19th century America, osteopaths have treated children of all ages. Today, receive specific referrals from other practitioners who treat children such as GPs, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, midwives, lactation consultants and health visitors.

Aidan Spencer and Nancy Nunn are experienced paediatric osteopaths who treat many children whose parents/carers seek help for a diverse range of symptoms and problems. Musculoskeletal tension can not only cause discomfort but can also effect how children develop movement and posture. Infants, toddlers and young school age children are too young or immature to accurately explain their discomfort and so they express pain or discomfort through changes in their behaviour. For example, if a baby is uncomfortable the only way he/she can express this is through crying, not sleeping and/or not feeding well. In a toddler, a similar pattern of tension may manifest in more complex ways involving behaviour, posture and development. Much of our work with infants and toddlers involves assessing their body for stresses and strains acquired in early life, through the physical force of birth or being confined to a cramped space while in the womb. When treating older children we often provide advice and treatment related to posture, injuries and musculoskeletal pain.

At Nunhead Osteopathy Practice, children of all ages are treated by dedicated paediatric osteopaths who have received specialist training in diagnosis, examination and the use of gentle but effective techniques, suitable for young patients. This enables, them to safely treat even the most fragile babies, including those born prematurely. Aidan and Nancy both have experience using osteopathy to treat children in a hospital setting, including Neonatal Intensive Care.
