The history of London's plumbing is surprisingly long and complicated. The first pipes were made from stone and clay, and the Romans brought us to lead piping. In 1743 Thomas Newcomen invented a more efficient steam engine that led to the invention of the modern flush toilet in 1851 by Alexander Cummings.
